Kids are using new media to bully each other, and in Florida (America’s wang, as Homer Simpson once remarked), adults are using YouTube to make threats to the police. Gang presence on the Internet, known as “net banging,” is growing.
Rudy Villanueva, 31 year old resident of Miami, posted a YouTube video in which he taunted police to arrest him. The police did and sent Villanueva to jail for more than six years. Last year Villanueva filmed himself waving guns in the air, inviting police to “come get some … We’s out here, we fighting a cold war.” Police also seized several weapons and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from his apartment.
Villanueva taunted the Metro Dade Gang unit, saying “here I am baby. You know you hate seeing me like this.” According to BBC news, District Judge Marcia Cooke “rejected Villanueva’s arguments that he was only joking in the video and never sought to threaten the police. The judge sent Villanueva to jail for six-and-a-half years, noting that he had 15 prior arrests.” That is a long time to think about poor editing choices.
